What It's Like To Teach At Western International University

Teaching at Western International University (WIU) is a unique and rewarding experience

Our faculty represent a broad spectrum of experience and cultural heritage. The small class sizes make it easy to get to know the student, get involved, and give personal attention. The students get to know each other as well, sharing experiences, ideas, and expanding their learning. Faculty often find that, because the students are working adults, they challenge what they are being taught. It is not unheard of for students to have expertise in a specific area that surpasses that of the faculty member, so faculty are always learning too.

WIU students want to learn. They are enrolled at WIU because they are interested in their field of study, want to progress in their career or move into a new one, and want to apply what they have learned as soon as possible. The WIU two-month sessions require a fast-paced delivery, and faculty find it both challenging and rewarding to provide the required content in a short time frame without overloading the students with homework. Teaching approaches must be varied and interesting to keep both students and faculty focused and engaged for several hours, after they have already put in a full day of work! And because of students' changing work and family schedules, faculty members need to be somewhat flexible and understanding.

what WIU faculty members have to say about their teaching experiences

"I know that WIU is evolving and maturing. WIU will continue to evolve into a top notch, highly respected university in the years to come. I find that challenging and exciting! It is truly a delight to work with older students; the experience—the humanness of it—is rich and rewarding. I have met some wonderful colleagues while at WIU; some have evolved into personal friendships. I actually look forward to faculty meetings, for having the chance to mix and mingle, to listen and participate with such able, experienced people. WIU is exciting, fun, delightful, invigorating, and gratifying for me."

"In many years of association with WIU, I have been rewarded by the positive interaction with adult learners who have participated in the ongoing learning necessary in today’s challenging environment. The learning model provides for instruction on leading-edge information and sharing of job-related and personal experience. I learn as much from students and colleagues as the input I provide. My learning experience at WIU has been invaluable to my professional growth."
